Custom HVAC Manufacturer Alerts Marine Industries about R-22 Phase Out

Nance International Offers Replacement Equipment for Marine Air Conditioning Units

Beaumont, Texas (Marketwire) - July 23, 2009 – Nance International, specializing in offshore air conditioning and refrigeration, has alerted its clients of a change regarding the Refrigerant 22 (R-22) unit. The company serves an international offshore drilling industrial clientele for marine air conditioners, refrigeration, and heating and ventilation systems.

Based on current EPA regulations related to emissive applications, production of R-22 is scheduled to be phased out in 2010 for new air conditioning equipment and in 2020 for all other service applications. New equipment using R-22 cannot be manufactured in the U.S. after 2010. Production of the refrigerant for any use will be significantly reduced. By 2020, there will be no production or importation of R-22.

For the OEM side of the market in the residential and light commercial Air Conditioning, R-410A is currently the main contender. Manufacturers with 410A equipment include Amana, Bryant, Carrier, Lennox, Rheem, Ruud, and Trane. In addition, all Japanese mini-split manufacturers have 410A systems. These include Matsu-shita, Hitachi, Toshiba, Sanyo, Sharp, and Daikin.

R-410A’s pressures are about 50% higher than R-22. Therefore R-410A cannot be used as a retrofit fluid in R-22 equipment. This is also true for pressure gauges, recovery tanks, recycling units, disposable cylinders, etc. In general, due to the pressure differences, equipment and storage devices must be designed to handle the higher pressure of R-410A.

New equipment is designed, rated, and approved by UL, ASME, building codes, etc., to handle the higher operating pressures that will be seen with R-410A. The safety factors used for pressure relief valves or rupture disks in disposable cylinders are as high or higher than those used previously with other refrigerants.

Nance International will continue to provide Refrigerant HVAC parts and repair to replace the Refrigerant 22 units without having to change out the complete systems. Nance can provide equipment on the same foot print to replace the existing units. This way an air handler or condenser can be replaced without have to change out the completed refrigerant system including piping, TXV, etc. A replacement refrigerant for Refrigerant 22 for equal system capacity will be required to be used.
